Checking In

Finding that Holmes was too absorbed for conversation, I had tossed aside the barren paper, and leaning back in my chair, I fell into a brown study. [RESI]

These are strange times we are living in.

The Covid-19 pandemic has many of us sheltering in place, with our workplaces closed and social gatherings prohibited. Others, like the Good Doctor, are essential workers in the medical field or in the service industries that we depend upon. You have our deepest gratitude.

While we are sad to see beloved and highly anticipated events canceled or postponed, we are heartened to see friends connecting through the virtual world. Being an online Society, the virtual world is our home.

We hope that all of you are keeping well and safe, and that you have plenty of good things to read.

    Thanks for checking in.

One bright light in these trying times is that, unlike Sherlockians before us, we are able to keep communicating virtually, through the miracle of electronic communications, and can meet together in the safety of our own homes, letting the Master bring us, in safety, to a time that was even more dangerous than our own.

I have wrought my simple plan,
If I give one hour of joy,
To the boy who’s half a man,
Or the man who’s half a boy,

    Dear Sherlockians, Dear Fellow Americans

I doubt I can say anything new about this horror which has not been said 1,000 times before by folks far more articulate than I. But it bears repeating because we need all the emotional support and reinforcement we can get now.

Whatever claustrophobia you feel, we all feel.
Whatever sadness you feel, we all feel.
Whatever worry and fear you feel, we all feel.
Whatever sense of doom and gloom oppresses you, oppresses us all.
But the bottom line is this, we are all in this together, as Sherlockians and as Americans.
So please remember this above all, you are not alone in this. We are all alone together.
This is our east wind come, such a wind as never blew on America yet.
But a cleaner, better, stronger land will lie in the sunshine when the storm has cleared.
And yes, this storm will clear!

    Dear friends, Watsonians, Holmesians, Sherlockians,

May you find your peace of mind in these troubled times. We’ll have better days. Meanwhile, the adventures of two men “who never lived, and so can never die” can help us all to endure boredom and idleness without resorting to pernicious 7% solutions.
